24 May - 4 June 2011
Opening Tuesday 24 May, 6-8pm
Canadian-born, Melbourne-based, abstract artist Lisa Balt presents her debut Australian exhibition, Art Balt .
Narrow colour range and a limited palette create, for Balt, a seemingly underworked canvas, stripping and nullifying associations of her visual forms and abstraction.
“Light hitting the finished painting gives freedom again to the eyes. These distractions are a pleasure as the work had been completed in silence. I like to think my work as ‘extempore paintings’, like jazz music in continuous stages of improvisation. Jazz to me is freeform and playful as well as juicy with personality. Art should be as close to visual music as possible”.
Through her art practice, Lisa Balt explores abstract forms and the relationship between colour and visual imagery, moving away from the purely illustrative or representational.
