Seven photographic artists working in the photogravure/photopolymer medium follow widely-divergent expressive paths. The eclectic collection spans a broad spectrum of subject matter, from natural history to the abstract, from portraiture to landscape.
Angela Coombs Matthews’ moody landscapes, Helen Oliver-Skuse’s arresting portraits and Karena Goldfinch’s haunting ornithological nature-scapes explore the medium’s atmospheric possibilities. Robert Ashton’s eerie monotone entomological frozen moments reveal the extraordinary detail and precision available, while Silvi Glattauer’s breathtaking botanical compositions and Dianne Longley’s almost-mythological conjurings extend the chromatic palette. Peter Garnick’s surreal triptychs employ a multiple plate process that exploits the medium’s transparent nature.
Luminous Ink is a vivid survey of contemporary interpretations of a 19th-century process by imaginative 21st-century practitioners.
