4 - 22 November 2015
Opening Wednesday 4 November, 6.30-8pm
The joyous oil or gouache paintings of Jo Reitze celebrate nature and the restorative quality of gardens. Her paintings are freely executed with lyrical, almost calligraphic mark making, diverse patterns and vibrant colours. Colours are often enhanced by strong tonal contrasts. As in nature, her compositions are unified by green hues. A close viewpoint, with recognisable plants, captures the essence of the particular garden - enclosing the viewer in a beautiful environment. All her works are inspired by direct observation and are completed on location, en plein air. Many of these recent garden glimpses show aspects of her Surrey Hills garden.
Jo Reitze (Mrs. de Carteret) is an award winning artist, a Fellow of the Victorian Artists Society and President of Melbourne Society of Women Painters & Sculptors. She coordinated Art at Canterbury Girls’ Secondary College for twenty years. Now her focus is on her own work. In 2005 she established Jo Reitze paints your garden, painting gardens on commission. Jo was the artist for the Beyond the Garden Wall project for Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre in 2008 and Artist in Residence at Cloudehill (2009-11). Recently she was filmed painting there for an episode of Put Some Colour in Your Life. In 2013 Jo was the invited artist for Whitehorse Artspace presenting The Artist’s Garden. At the Opening, Sophie Matthiesson, Curator, International Art NGV and coordinating curator of Monet’s Garden related Reitze’s work to that of both Monet and Hockney.
