Museum Afterparty follows an ongoing theme of commenting on people living under challenging circumstances, in this case, admiring Indian history but subtly addressing ancient traditions that now feed modern social issues.
The work here stems from a 2013 artist’s residency that included many days of drawing in the museum at Sanskriti Kendra, Delhi. The disparate terracotta figures that I befriended range from miniscule votive objects to massive deities and vary significantly in size, importance, caste, gender, religion and geographical background.
They do, however, coexist together as one family in the same building complex and as seen in the Museum Party images, when the visitors go home, these figures leave their various rooms and, apart from some minor personality clashes, get together and communicate as equals – which is a significant example for all of us.
