This exhibition is about period homes and gardens, about the idea of home being a sanctuary from the stresses of daily living, about gardens being a sanctuary for peaceful, thoughtful contemplation, relaxation and beauty for the senses.

In painting this series of works, I drew inspiration from the period homes around Camberwell, Armadale, Canterbury and Surrey Hills. The architecture of these historic houses has a timeless appeal. They were built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when attention to detail and craftsmanship was the order of the day. They have stood the test of time.

My art practice is focused on the ‘domestic’, the celebration of life on the home front. Houses are more than bricks and mortar to me. They are symbols of ‘mother’, ‘nurturing’, ‘safety’ and an expression of the individuals who live in them. I am drawn to character in a house, to the intricate detail of lace wrought iron, to diamond pane windows, decorative brick patterns, colourful paint trims and picket fences.

Complementary to houses are the gardens that surround them. The garden can add colour in all seasons, it can add mystery and lyrical lines with its tree branches and garden beds. It can perfume the air and calm the mind. I love the brick paths that lead from a decorative gate up to the front porch. The back garden especially can be private, womb-like and an opportunity to connect with nature in the urban environment.

These paintings are about timeless sanctuaries that celebrate our past but also give the spiritual nourishment we all need in our lives today.
