“Art is like a footprint which shows that one has walked bravely and in great happiness.”  ― Robert Henri

Degrees of Connection reflects the journeys of two remarkable Australian artists, Nadeen Lovell and Kimberley Kohan. Experiencing the world — across continents and time zones, seasons and cultures — their work has been inspired by the windswept plains of Mongolia, the icebergs of the Antarctic and the tropical mystery of Madagascar — but mostly by the rugged majesty of Australia's North West — the Pilbara and the Kimberley.

Where some might see a disconnect in these varied locations, Nadeen and Kimberley see connection. The landscapes they "have bravely walked" range from the minus 35 degree temperatures in the frigid steppes of Mongolia to the 35 degree days of the Kimberley's hot and humid summers. The contrast between the Antarctic, Madagascar and the Pilbara, has led to the "great happiness" they have found immersed in these unique and inspiring locations.

Glaciers, tropics, endless desert, dreamtime waterfalls — but always and everywhere to be interpreted onto canvas.

“Invisible threads are the strongest ties.”
― Friedrich Nietzsche

Degrees of Connection, which includes more than 40 works by the two artists, is the second time Nadeen and Kimberley have jointly exhibited in Melbourne, following their success of the exhibition Raw Power of the Kimberley in 2001.

Degrees of Connection challenges the viewer to look beyond apparent differences — the contrasting styles, the diverse subject matter, even the varied sizes and framing of the works — and to explore for themselves the connection between artist and landscape and the spirituality that links rather than divides.
