Treelines is a series of semi-abstract landscape photographs, in which Drew explores a new way of interpreting the landscape of forests. These blurred photographs are created in a single exposure and with minimal digital retouching, simply by moving the camera during long exposures. Drew aims for photographs that reduce the complex detail of the forest to lines, areas of colour, repetition, light and shade. While blurriness isn’t normally associated with order, in this case it gives a certain degree of order to the otherwise random natural landscape, accentuating patterns, shapes and colours that were present but not immediately noticeable. There is an element of chance in this technique but also predictability.

Drew Echberg is a freelance photographer and artist living in Brunswick. His work has been exhibited at the Australian Centre for Photography, the Queensland Centre for Photography, the Gold Coast Arts Centre, Victorian Parliament House, Chiquitica Gallery and Collingwood Gallery. He has been a finalist in numerous art and photography prizes and competitions. In 2010 he was named by Capture Magazine as Australia’s Top Emerging Landscape Photographer.
