These works have all been executed around the Port of Melbourne and the Maribyrnong River in West Melbourne. They have a recurrent theme of water and boats, ocean, ships and skies. They describe a year in progression: beginning from evocative skies to The Blackbird, a long established business taking passengers up the Maribyrnong River to the bulky container vessels and oil tankers, conveying cargo to and from the rest of the world.

Maggie has a family connection with the merchant navy and merchant ships, but it was the shape of the boats that first caught her attention. Boatbuilding is an ancient art and in a similar way, working in front of the motif is a traditional way of working and one which Maggie prefers. “It’s about the feel of the thing, rather than what it looks like”, she said. “Working outside I get to engage with the community and I found people to be curious and very respectful”.
