6 - 24 April 2016
Opening Wednesday 6 April, 6.30-8pm
My aim with this series of works is to explore the surface of paint as a medium that emanates its own unique qualities and complexities as well as conjure up through the application process memories of childhood creativity and freedom.
I have chosen to work with paint because it facilitates a multi-layered approach to art-making, it enables me to indulge in the physical characteristics of the medium as well as the psychological benefits such as risk taking, intimacy, working quickly, feeling, purging; all of which make a sense of freedom.
My approach strategically aims to capture themes of naivety and simplicity; concepts that are important to me and my practice and that reflect an authenticity and purity of living life in the moment.
Often the pace and fluidity of the process is immensely fulfilling. An indulgence.
Objects I have chosen to paint act as ‘carriers’ in this work and are often within reach of me when I am painting in the studio, some are permanent and obvious necessities in my daily studio practice like a simple paint brush, other are ‘temporary’ and ‘every day’ but are pertinent because of their shape and size and their ability to allow me to explore and interrogate my own thoughts and ideas around process and paint and consequently why I choose to work with it.
