Marks on Paper
Wednesday 1 - Sunday 26 August 2018
Opening Wednesday 1 August, 6.30-8pm
The images within Marks on Paper have no visual reference to reality but represent a deep personal aesthetic sense. Gussy’s creative practice often starts from an unplanned and uncontrolled base with found objects, or marks made quickly and randomly on paper.
Gussy is interested in the way context, chance and human agency all converge in the process of making meaning. The majority of the body of work in Marks on Paper is the result of mark-making on tracing paper using substrates produced by the intense heating of wood, coal tar pitch and house paint. The paper is only partially opaque at the beginning of the process obscuring some of the more subtle marks and tone. But when mounted, the light refraction is altered and the final image presents itself. Random staining, creasing and tearing during the mounting process using high pressure and adhesives add further to the depth and tone.
