Bruce Baycroft

Bruce Baycroft obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Canada, majoring in painting and sculpture. After working in photography for several years, clay became his principal medium. He produced sculptural and functional ceramics, participating in craft fairs and supplying shops and galleries across Canada. Over the past two decades he has gradually returned to his first love, painting. The landscape has been his primary subject matter, influences being Tonalist painters such as Charles Eaton, George Innes and, after moving to Australia, Arthur Streeton.

Now based in Melbourne for more than a decade, Baycroft is currently working on a series of paintings and drawings that are about the proliferation of residential and urban development in Melbourne. He is particularly interested in the unintentional aesthetic created by ordinary materials used in the construction of buildings. Elements like shade cloth, ageing plywood, temporary supports and scaffolding produce a visual dialogue he finds more interesting than the finished building itself.
