Heather Wood - 'Facing the Southern Ocean'
Wednesday 24 July - Sunday 18 August 2019
The dramatic landscape of the south coast of Victoria and the west coast of Tasmania is sculptured by the wild weather of the Southern Ocean.
Steep limestone cliffs and huge areas of rolling sand dunes that reveal evidence of ancient occupation are the subject of Heather Wood’s paintings. Changes in light and colour are captured by her strong use of the palette knife, and the fragility of one slip of sand is balanced by the overall strength of the whole. Wood uses strong colour contrasts and broad strokes of paint to give drama and substance to the image, yet also employs fine delicate brush strokes to the grasses and foliage which expresses the vulnerability of the dunes.
