Peter Brook - 'Kati Thanda: suggestion of memories'
Wednesday 29 August - Sunday 23 September 2018
Kati Thanda (Lake Eyre) is Australia’s largest salt lake and was renamed in 2012 in recognition of the traditional custodians of the land, the Arabana people.
Kati Thanda: suggestion of memories takes as its starting point Kati Thanda from a vantage point of 35,000 feet. This series explores the ephemeral, sensual and changing surface of the lake; home to striking visual markers of sweeping pink algae pigmentation, floodwaters, evaporated flows, as well as awakening and shifting deposits of ores, minerals and salt.
In this body of work, Brook explores these visual markers at the threshold between painting and drawing, representation and abstraction. Moving away from earlier more literal depictions of the earth’s surface these current works edge towards an organic minimalism allowing alternate visual spaces for suggestion of memories.
