Stefan Gevers
Stefan Gevers is an artist who embraces the unpredictability and fluidity of watercolour. His work is not about gaining mastery over this medium, but rather about understanding its innate properties, its natural inclinations, and learning to work collaboratively with it. I see myself as a mediator between the landscape and the medium, its shaping and reshaping, in which social structures and cultural worlds are enfolded.
To comprehend the landscape sometimes you need to see the organic quality of the land. Every landscape has individuality as well as relation to other landscapes and the same is true for the forms that make it up.
The interplay of positive and negative space guides us deeper into the narrative of the landscape, focus in on specific locations and bringing to light the invisible elements that contribute to the 'bigger picture'. The vertical lines and texture serve as a screen or curtain, spotlighting a scene, a place, a viewpoint, while offering a sense of seclusion. Concurrently, it obscures and reveals the past and future. It's a contemplation of our role and obligations within the landscape, with trees as the timeless, silent observers.
